COLUMBUS, Ind. — Efforts continued Monday to clean up tree debris in Bartholomew County after another round of storms swept through the community Sunday with heavy damage reported in the Taylorsville area.

The latest wave of severe weather on Sunday brought penny-sized hail and wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour, according to Bartholomew County Emergency Management.

The storm toppled several trees in the Taylorsville area, including along County Road 400W and Ohio Ridge Road and in the Helfin Park campground.

Images taken of the area showed partially collapsed campers, heavily damaged vehicles and multiple downed trees at the campground and several large fallen trees along Ohio Ridge Road and County Road 400W.

“All of a sudden, this wind just came pounding on the back of our house,” said Lisa Milenbaugh, who lives in the area. “First, we heard hail, and then it was rain and the wind and everything. Then it was all gone. When I went outside, it’s like, ‘My whole backyard looks completely different.’ I had all kinds of trees and stuff and (the wind) snapped the top of the six (the trees) off.”

In Columbus, five to six crews of workers from the Columbus Department of Public Works were making their way through the city collecting debris and brush from the storm, said department director Bryan Burton.
