Go Guide – July 6

1) One of my doctors has been insistently preaching a message of late on the overall health benefits of the great outdoors (OK, not so much during the recent haze, but still). So here’s the most rudimentary of reminders: Simply driving slowly through Brown County State Park can be relaxing when you need just a simple, basic getaway. So even if you don’t have an entire day to enjoy one of the Midwest’s coolest natural treasures, perhaps you can catch a sunset from one of the vistas amid the park’s 16,000 acres. Or you can unwind on part of the 18 miles of hiking trails, from easy to rugged. Information: in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/brown-county-state-park.

2) Another warm-weather outdoor option: Maybe you can catch the ’90s-tinged original alternative tunes and cover versions of the Resounding Maybes, performing a free concert from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Bartholomew County Public Library Plaza, 536 Fifth St. in downtown Columbus. Organizers encourage people to bring lawn chairs, coolers and snacks. This event can also be viewed live at facebook.com/mybcpl. Information: mybcpl.org.

3) Just in case the weather turns stifling, you can head indoors to YES Cinema and catch one of the newest releases: “Sound of Freedom,” based on a true story starring Jim Cavaziel. After rescuing a young boy from ruthless child traffickers, a federal agent learns the boy’s sister is still captive and decides to embark on a dangerous mission to save her.
