Brinegar takes 2nd in TYR 1,500

IRVINE, Calif. — Michael Brinegar swam the third-fastest time by an American in the 1,500-meter freestyle Saturday in finishing second in a TYR Pro Series Championships in Irvine, Calfornia.

The Columbus native swam a personal-best 14 minutes, 59.54 seconds to become just the 15th American ever to break 15:00 in the 1,500 freestyle.

Earlier in the competition, Brinegar had finished fourth in the 800 freestyle in 7:54.88 and eighth in the 400 freestyle in 3:52.05.

Brinegar, who finished 17th in both the 800 freestyle and 1,500 freestyle in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, has been in southern California training with longtime coach Mark Schubert, who has returned from coaching in China. Brinegar will continue to train there through the 2024 Olympic Trials, which will be held June 15 to 23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
