Prep sports notebook: East, North to host kickoff festivities

Both Columbus high schools will be holding festivities Saturday to kick off the school sports season.

Columbus East will be holding its first Athletics Tailgate Party from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the school’s south parking lot.

The tailgate party will include food trucks, a cornhole tournament and other yard games and bounce houses. There also will be live music from 5 to 7 p.m.

Columbus North’s annual Blue and White Night will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the school.

The athletics department will host an informational meeting for all student-athletes and their parents in Memorial Gym, and All-Sports passes will be sold throughout the evening. There will be a “Dog Bowl” involving all North fall, winter and spring sports teams at Max Andress Field, and the football team will have an intrasquad scrimmage beginning at 7 p.m.

Also, the Columbus North Booster Club is partnering with Soles4Souls to host a shoe drive. New and gently used shoes of all types can be dropped off in collection boxes at the Blue and White Night. Athletic and dress shoes of all sizes and styles will be accepted. Soles4Souls creates opportunities for women in developing nations to start and sustain small businesses.
