COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Columbus Board of Public Works has approved temporarily closing a downtown intersection later this month to allow an Exhibit Columbus structure to be installed.

The board voted Tuesday to allow the closure of the intersection of Fourth and Washington Streets from Aug. 13 to 22 so that workers can install a canopy structure over the intersection.

The request was made by Taylor Bros. Construction Company, which stated in its request that “partial or complete opening may occur during installation downtime(s) as along as any potential hazards have been eliminated.”

As part of the agreement, the city will retain the flexibility to adjust the dates of the closure as needed.

The canopy structure, called “Interoculus,” was designed by New York City-based PAU and is inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, local carnival vernacular, ice cream sundaes from Zaharakos and the wigwams of the Miami and Shawnee peoples, according to Exhibit Columbus’ website.

The structure won one of four recipients of the 2023 J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller Prize.

Exhibit Columbus is an exploration of community, architecture, art, and design that activates the modern legacy of Columbus. In the past, it has attracted an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 people over a three-month period.
