Prep sports notebook: Area football, volleyball teams opening regular seasons this week

The fall sports season is in full swing this week after getting under way with regular-season matches in volleyball, boys and girls soccer, boys cross-country and boys tennis on Saturday.

Tonight, the Columbus East, Columbus North and Hauser volleyball teams will be playing in their home openers. The Bull Dogs will host Seymour at 6:45 p.m. (5:30 p.m. JV), while the Olympians will host Bloomington North and the Jets will host Jennings County at 7:15 p.m. (6 p.m. JV).

Friday Night Lights makes its return this weekend. Columbus North will host Decatur Central, and Columbus East will travel to Bloomington South. Both are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.

Tennis matches postponed

Due to Monday’s weather, the Columbus North vs. Whiteland, Columbus East vs. Bloomington South and Hauser vs. Knightstown boys tennis matches were postponed.

Makeup dates for those matches are to be determined.

Schedule changes announced

The Columbus North boys tennis match against Seymour that was scheduled for Sept. 4 has been moved to Sept. 25. The start time for the match will remain at 4:30 p.m.

Also, the Hauser volleyball contest against Shawe Memorial on Sept. 1 has been canceled. To make up for that match, the Jets played against New Washington Monday night to open their season.

North baseball to hold Alumni Game

Columbus North baseball will be holding an Alumni Game at 1 p.m. Aug. 26 at the varsity diamond at Southside Elementary.

All almumi players and former coaches are invited to participate or watch. Old uniforms and current team hats will be available for purchase.
