Carter Gant bounced back in grand fashion on Wednesday.
After carding a triple-bogey on the third hole, Gant finished 1-over on the other eight holes to post a 4-over 40 to earn medalist honors and help Columbus East to a 188-204 girls golf victory against Greenwood at Otter Creek.
“It was definitely a rough hole. I tripled it, and I’ve never even tripled a hole out here, so that was kind of humbling,” Gant said. “The next hole, I parred, so I definitely bounced back. It was mostly realizing that I did that, and it is in the past and I can’t change it and just move on. That is really the only thing you can do.”
Aside from the triple-bogey, Gant finished with five pars, two bogeys and a birdie.
“She recovered,” East coach LaDonna VanDeventer said. “She stayed with it and never gave up.”
Gant was pleased with her short game the most on Wednesday.
“My chipping was a lot better,” Gant said. “I also one-putted for a birdie (on No. 8), which was a par-5, so that definitely helped. It helped me gain momentum.”
Other scores for the Olympians were Dyana Foster with a 47, Ali Truebood added a 50 and Grace LaSell had a 51 to complete the team scoring. Allison Sharpe finished with a 68, and Sophia Begley added a 71 for East.
Wednesday’s team score was much improved from the 199 that East scored Monday against Seymour at Shadowood.
“It was definitely a lot better than Monday night,” VanDeventer said. “We are definitely going in a good direction.”
VanDeventer also likes how the team has improved throughout the season.
“We have goals that we have set,” VanDeventer said. “I think that we can still reach them.”
