College sports notebook: Lang assists on winning goal in upset of Notre Dame

Jenna Lang assisted on the game’s lone goal Thursday in Michigan’s 1-0 women’s soccer upset win at No. 11-ranked Notre Dame.

Lang, a sophomore from Columbus North, also helped the Wolverines to a 3-2 win against Western Michigan on Sunday.

Michigan (4-1-2) opens Big Ten Conference play Friday against Minnesota.

Newells help Navy claim team titles

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Matt and Brianna Newell both were their cross-country teams’ seventh runners to help Navy to the men’s and women’s team titles in Saturday’s Navy Invitational.

Matt Newell, a sophomore from Columbus North, finished ninth in the men’s race in 25 minutes, 17.37 seconds for 4.9 miles. Brianna Newell, a freshman from North, took 18th in the women’s race in 23:27.74 for 6K (3.8 miles).

The Midshipmen will compete in Virginia’s Panorama Farms Invitational on Sept. 23.

Gilley notches digs in ISU losses

MOREHEAD, Ky. — Cadence Gilley, a sophomore from Columbus East, recorded four digs for Indiana State in volleyball losses to both Morehead State and Butler on Friday.

The Sycamores (2-7) went 0-3 in Morehead’s Comfort Inn-Vitational. They host IUPUI on Friday.

Collier has three catches vs. MSU

Mitchel Collier led Central Michigan with three catches for 30 yards in a season-opening 31-7 loss at Central Michigan on Sept. 1.

Collier, a redshirt-sophomore tight end from Columbus North, helped the Chippewas to a 45-42 win against New Hampshire on Saturday.
