Athletes of the Week

Boston Ely

MALE

Boston Ely // Columbus East junior soccer player

Ely scored the Olympians’ goal in a 2-1 loss at Bloomington South. He had an assist in Thursday’s 4-3 loss at Franklin Central and two assists in Saturday’s 4-1 win against Jeffersonville.

His performance last week: “We had a lot of games, so it was tough staying not sore and getting a lot of rest after getting home late. I’m pretty happy with it.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I just make sure I take good care of my body. I eat well. I have a hot tub at home, so I get in the hot tub to relax my muscles, and other than that, just eat healthy.”

Favorite drink: “Propel Berry”

Favorite food: “Tropical Smoothie kiwi quencher with whey protein and Chipotle chicken club sandwich.”

Favorite class: “Weights”

Favorite sports team: “DePauw University, because my sister (K.J.) plays soccer there, and I’ve been up there a couple of times to watch their boys soccer team.”

Favorite athlete: “Recently, I’ve been starting to watch (Lionel) Messi a lot because he came into the states.”

Role model: “My dad (Jason Ely). He’s always supporting me. He and my mom (Tanya) are both very supportive. They both push me to my hardest and keep me on the right track.”

Best advice: “At practice, play as if it’s a game because you always have to have the same mentality on the field.”

Athletics goal: “Club season is coming up, so I really want to just keep pushing myself and make myself better. I want to get to college.”

If you could travel anywhere: “I’ve been to Spain, but I’d have to say Spain again. We had a foreign exchange student from there, and it’s just a great environment, and (teammate) Martin (Simon Rodriguez) being here, I’ve learned a lot more about it.”

FEMALE

Do you do anything special to prepare? “I always do my hair the exact same way. I always do a slick-back with bubble braids, and I’m in charge of the music, so we always have pregame music going on to get us hyped up.”

Favorite drink: “I love Coke.”

Favorite food: “Sushi”

Favorite class: “I like my senior project English class the best right now. I’m managing and marketing East athletics through their Instagram account.”

Favorite sports team: “I have to root on my Indiana State Sycamores (where she has committed to play next year).”

Favorite athlete: “My brother and sister (ISU baseball player Cole Gilley and ISU volleyball player Cadence Gilley). I look up to them, and watching them succeed all the time, it makes want to push myself to be as good as they are.”

Role model: “My brother and sister for sure.”

Best advice: “My dad (Steve Gilley) always tells me, ‘Life is about choices. Choose the one that’s going to make you a better student, athlete or person.’”

Athletics goal: “I’m going to shoot for 500 digs on the season.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Italy, because I love pasta.”
