Bull Dogs fall to Braves in regular-season finale

Columbus North went into Saturday’s regular-season finale with a chance to claim a share of the Conference Indiana volleyball title.

Terre Haute South, however, wasn’t in the sharing mood. The Braves wrapped up the outright title with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-16 victory.

“I think it was a good game to have right before sectional,” North coach Jenna Ortega said. “Terre Haute is a good team, and we’re a good team, but we just had some silly errors that we can do better next time.”

Terre Haute South led the entire first set, although the Bull Dogs (15-12, 3-2) got to within 15-13 after back-to-back aces by Reese Edwards. In a back-and-forth first half of the second set, North led 14-13 before the Braves took the lead for good and held on to win.

The Bull Dogs led 10-8 in the third set before Terre Haute South went on a 13-1 run and went on to finish off the match.

Edwards led North with 27 assists and two aces. Kennedy Horn pounded 16 kills and Morgan Osborn notched 20 digs.

Also for North, Karen Dutro tallied six kills, Edwards added nine digs and Katelynn Mabis served one ace.

The Bull Dogs will play Shelbyville at around 7:45 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the Class 4A Franklin Sectional.

“I feel like we made the errors and beat ourselves,” Ortega said. “But at the same time, we had a lot of good moments, so I’m not mad. We just have to some things to work on and prepare for sectional this week.”
