Cougars sweep Lancers in sectional opener

WALDRON — South Decatur opened volleyball sectional action Tuesday with a 25-12, 25-23, 25-16 win against Edinburgh in the Waldron Sectional.

Taylor Somers led the Cougars (16-7) with nine kills and five blocks. Makayla Somers recorded 27 assists, Zsophia Sharp notched 26 digs and Paige McQueen served three aces.

Also for South Decatur, Sharp tallied seven kills and two aces, Molly Eden contributed five kills and 18 digs and Makayla Somers had four blocks and McQueen added four kills, three blocks and 13 digs.

“The girls came ready to play, and it showed,” South Decatur coach Devin Clark said. “They played every point with intensity and determination to bring home this huge victory for the first round of sectional. All the girls played a phenomenal game.”

MacKenzie Bieker led the Lancers (12-19) with five blocks and 20 digs. Kenna Streeval pounded 17 kills, Kyah Streeval recorded 23 assists and Jessica Walsh served two aces.

Also for Edinburgh, Bieker tallied five kills and one ace, Zoey Sida had five kills and three blocks, Kenna Streeval notched 17 digs, Walsh added 16 digs, Mia Dodson had two blocks and Kyah Streeval served one ace.

South Decatur advances to play host Waldron in the semifinals at 11 a.m. Saturday. The sectional final is at 6 p.m. Saturday.
