COLUMBUS, INDIANA
Dwight D. Grooms, 85, of Columbus, passed from this life at 6:04 a.m. Sunday, January 14, 2024, at The Belmont Health &Rehabilitation.
Mr. Grooms was born May 3, 1938, in Liberty, Kentucky, the son of Claude S. and Thelma Edwards Grooms.
He married Linda A. Koehler January 15, 1960.
His three passions were motorcycle riding/racing, classic cars, and shooting pool.
He raced motorcycles competitively, inspiring his boys to do the same, from early youth through his mid 59’s. He acquired countless wins through the decades. He also competed in pool tournaments from here to Las Vegas to near his end.
Dwight was an uncompromising man who lived life on his own terms. He was a son, a husband, a father, and a trusted friend. After coming to Columbus, he worked at Cummins. He had a multitude of other jobs including selling everything from cemetery plots, cars and homes to, investing and building commercial real estate.
He loved spending his family vacations in Colorado, camping at 10,000 feet and riding motorcycles with family and friends for 2 weeks each August.
He spent many a weekend with his boys racing and riding trails at Stoney Lonesome motorcycle club.
He always had a plan, wasn’t afraid of a drink, loved his family, and appreciated his friends.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years; children, John (Kathy) Grooms of Webster, MA, Troy Grooms and Merritt Grooms both of California and Travis Grooms of Columbus; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sisters, Carole (Phillip) Woods of Naples, FL and Claudette (David) Barnette of Columbus, OH; brother, Marshall (Diane) Grooms of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dwayne Grooms; daughter-in-law, Karen Grooms; and a great-granddaughter, Leah Vance.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street.
Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation from 11:00 a.m. to time of service Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the funeral home.
The family request that everyone attending please dress casual.
In keeping with Dwight’s wishes, cremation took place.
