The northbound lane of Jackson Street, between Second and Third Streets in downtown Columbus, will close for one year starting next week as crews begin work on the Bartholomew County Courthouse. The closure will also include the sidewalk.
The Columbus Board of Public Works approved the right of way request from Dunlap and Co., who intend to use the space as a storage area for their work replacing the HVAC system at the courthouse.
“They are working on a big project for the courthouse and they need to stage material in that area, and where they’re going to put their material, they need a fence around it as well,” City Engineer Andrew Beckort told the board.
The closure begins Monday at 7 a.m. and will last until April 11, 2025.
“The roadside and sidewalk on the north and south sides shall have temporary chain link fencing. The lawn shall have posts with snow fencing to keep pedestrians out of the storage area. A “Road Closed” sign shall be placed at the south entrance to Jackson Street coming off Second Street,” the site plan reads.
The request also requires Dunlap and Co. to contact the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic to coordinate about the annual Salute Concert that typically takes place on the courthouse lawn every Memorial Day weekend. It also requires the same for The Cole which is adjacent to the closure.
