VERNON — Jennings County historian Sheila Kell will receive one of the state’s top awards for contributions to local family and historical research.
Kell will be honored at the Jennings County Historical Society’s annual meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at the North American House, 134 Brown St., Vernon. The program this year celebrates Kell’s achievements and contributions in assisting families through researching their ancestors for more than 50 years.
Kell is known for individual assistance with family histories but also the extensive and well-researched articles she posts on the Jennings County Genweb site, ingenweb.org/injennings/.
The Historical Society will hold a brief business meeting followed by a special recognition award for Kell presented by Tamara Hemmerlein, director of local history services at the Indiana Historical Society. Kell will be presented the Willard C. Heiss Family History-Genealogy Award, one of the most prestigious awarded annually through the Indiana Historical Society.
The public is invited to extend congratulations to Kell and enjoy a reception with refreshments. Those interested in knowing more about how to research family history also are encouraged to attend.
