Scholarship applications available

Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International is offering a $2,000 non-renewable scholarship for a degree in the field of education. Applicants must be a senior attending a Bartholomew County high school and plan to attend college as a full-time student. Applications are available through high school guidance/scholarship offices. Completed applications are due by April 2.

The organization is also offering a $2,000 non-renewable scholarship to an incoming senior level IU-Columbus student who is pursuing a degree in the field of education. Applicants must be planning to attend the university as a full-time student. Applications are available through the Director of School and Community Relations, Division of Education. Completed applications are due by April 2.

Ivy Tech hosts college visit days

Ivy Tech Community College is hosting special college visit days designed specifically for homeschool students in grades 9-12 and their parents to learn about the college.

The Homeschool College Visit Days will be from 9 a.m. to noon March 1 at Ivy Tech Columbus, 4475 Central Ave., and from 9 a.m. to noon March 8 at Ivy Tech Franklin, 2205 McClain Drive, Franklin. Lunch will be served at both events.

Homeschool students and their parents are invited to attend either event. Ivy Tech will provide informative and immersive experiences to learn about the college and explore potential careers, including:

  • Meeting with faculty from a wide range of academic programs, including advanced manufacturing, business, healthcare, and information technology.
  • Experiencing potential careers with immersive virtual reality simulations.
  • Discovering dual credit and accelerated degree opportunities.
  • Learning how Ivy Tech can prepare you for a career or transferring to a four-year university for continued education.

Edinburgh student represents Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER — Pharmacy student Chris Brunstetter of Edinburgh is the winner of the APhA-ASP National Patient Counseling Competition at Manchester University.

After winning the local competition, Brunstetter went on to represent Manchester at the National APhA preliminary round on Thursday, Feb. 15 and Friday, Feb. 16.

The competition encourages student pharmacists in their efforts toward becoming better patient educators, and begins on the local level as students compete to be the national representative from their school or college of pharmacy. Each of the top 10 finalists that compete in the final round of local competition will receive an award from APhA-ASP.

Spanish language event planned

Local families are invited to “Ven Y Conoce,” a Spanish-language event on Feb. 25, starting 3 p.m. at the Columbus Learning Center, 4555 Central Ave.

Spanish-speaking community members, especially high school students and their families, are encouraged to join and learn about higher education opportunities in Columbus, including the admissions process, degrees and programs, and scholarship opportunities. The event also includes a tour of the facilities, with representatives from each campus.

All presentations and materials for this event are in Spanish. As part of an open house for the entire Airpark campus, this event is run in partnership with Tu Futuro, IU Columbus, Ivy tech, and Purdue Polytechnic.

Literacy Festival seeks booth participants

The Bartholomew County Literacy Task Force will host the 15th annual Bartholomew Reads Authors Conference and Literary Festival at Central Middle School on April 6.

In addition to its traditional activities of children’s games and activities focused on literacy, the festival will feature presentations by author Jerry Craft, as well as presentations by local authors.

Craft will give his presentation from 10 to 11 a.m. with activities focusing on children and families from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Door prizes will be awarded and there will be gently used books available for distribution.

The task force has been active with many literacy initiatives including the publication of a multilingual parent book.

Organizations that wish to have a station at the literacy festival providing a children’s game or activity that involves literacy are welcome to apply by sending an email to reserve a booth to [email protected]. Booth activities are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Bartholomew County Literacy Task Force is a collaborative initiative involving organizations and agencies concerned with the level of literacy in the community. The goals of the task force are that all children come to school ready to learn to read, all children will read on grade level by third grade, all caregivers will be equipped to support their child’s education, all Bartholomew County adults will be proficient readers and all adults will support county literacy initiatives.

East Wrestling sponsors Mulch Madness

The Columbus East Wrestling Club will present the 13th annual Mulch Madness fundraiser to support its wrestling program.

Delivery dates will be April 13, April 14 and April 27 with a rainout date of April 28.

The mulch is an AA hardwood brown mulch from Tiffany Lawn and Garden in Indianapolis. Different colors are available for delivery and the wrestlers may be hired to spread it for you as part of the fundraiser. Mulch will be sold by the yard with the cost to spread at $45 per yard. Payment is due at the time of delivery.
