East relay team shatters school record, qualifies for consolation finals

INDIANAPOLIS — After narrowly missing out on a spot in the consolation finals in the 200-yard medley relay, Columbus East made it to the consolation heat of the 400 freestyle relay in the Boys Swimming and Diving State Finals.

Cavan Stilson, Keaton Stephenson, Misha Machavariani and Judah Nickoll finished 14th in Friday’s preliminaries in 3 minutes, 12.34 seconds, breaking the school record they set in last week’s sectional by nearly three seconds.

Earlier in the meet, East’s Todd Hundley, Machavariani, Nickoll and Stilson finished 17th in the 200 medley relay prelims in 1:37.90, just 18-hundreths of a second out of the final consolation qualifying spot. The top eight in each event made today’s championship finals, while 9-through-16 made the consolation heats.

Columbus North’s Diego Cotero Tapia, Aarush Mahato, Isaac Proffitt and Jude Abdallah finished 21st in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.41. Cotero Tapia took 28th in the 100 butterfly in 52.87, and Abdallah was 30th in the 50 freestyle in 22.27.

East’s Gavin Day will compete in the diving event, beginning at 9 a.m. today at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium. The top 16 divers will make their final three attempts during the normal break in the swimming finals and consolations, which begin at 1 p.m.
