Bull Dogs capture regional title

The Columbus North gymnasts won the Franklin Central Regional title on Friday.

INDIANAPOLIS — On a night when Columbus North’s top two gymnasts weren’t at their best, the supporting cast stepped up.

The Bull Dogs depth helped them pull out a 107.775 to 107.575 edge over Bloomington North for the Franklin Central Regional title. Bloomington South claimed the third and final state-qualifying spot with a 103.425.

“It was a team effort because some of our top gymnasts had some problems, but one of the things I’ve been wanting all year long is for our third and fourth gymnasts to step up and show what they can do,” North coach Bob Arthur said. “Our first girls up did so well, that kept us in the hunt. Reese and Hannah had problems, but they didn’t give up. They kept fighting. Overall, it was just a fantastic team effort to bring back that regional title.”

Reese Euler finished second in the all-around competition with a 37.55, two-tenths of a point behind Franklin Central’s Austyn Dykes. Euler won the vault (9.45) and bars (9.575) and finished second on the floor (9.6) and sixth on the beam (8.925).

North’s Hannah Perry finished eighth in the all-around with a 34.25. Perry finished fifth on the vault (9.2) and tied for ninth on the floor (9.45).

Emerson Chambers placed sixth on the bars (8.65), and Arwyn Tian took seventh on the beam (8.875). Ellie McIntier was 10th on the vault (8.8). Laney Acton finished 14th on both the bars (7.9) and beam (8.275) and 15th on the floor (9.075).

“Emerson Chambers had her best score on bars, which was a fantastic accomplishment,” Arthur said. “Arwyn had a great beam routine, Laney did a great job on beam and Ellie McIntier on vault. I can’t say enough about the entire team. It just absolutely warmed my heart to see the kids that had struggled throughout the year step up and get the team through.”
