Prep sports notebook: Hurt, Gotoh pick colleges; Woodard named to Supreme 15

Columbus North junior Hadassah Hurt has committed to continue her basketball career at IU Columbus.

The Crimson Pride are starting basketball in the 2024-25 school year. Hurt averaged 10.8 points in eight games this year before her season was cut short because of an ACL injury.

“I am so excited and blessed to announce my commitment to IU of Columbus,” Hurt wrote in her announcement on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I would most importantly like to thank God for this blessing and allowing me to play the sport I love and for him getting through all the setbacks and adversity that I’ve experienced.”

Hurt also thanked IUC athletics director Zach McClellan, assistant AD Tyler Wright and coach Dana Dunson, along with all of her coaches throughout high school, middle school, AAU, elementary and youth leagues.

“And a huge thank ypu to my parents and my grandparents that have supported throughout all my years of playing, and for all the trips to practice, games etc., also for believing in me and helping me achieve my goals and dreams,” she wrote. “I’m super excited to for the future and can’t wait to see what’s ahead!”

North’s Gotoh commits to Hanover

Columbus North senior Nico Gotoh has committed to continue his soccer career at Hanover.

Gotoh recorded five goals and two assists as a junior and eight goals and three assists as a senior in helping the Bull Dogs to back-to-back state final four appearances.

Woodard named to Supreme 15

Jennings County senior Juliann Woodard has been named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Franciscan Senior All-State Supreme 15.

Jennings senior Alivia Elmore was named Senior Honorable Mention and Jennings sophomore Mollie Ernstes and Trinity Lutheran junior Madison Keith were named Underclass Honorable Mention.

Woodard also was named first-team All-State by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association. Elmore and Columbus North freshman Kaylie Harmon were named second-team All-State, and North sophomore Miley McClellan was third-team All-State.

Locals make IBCA Academic-All State

Several local girls basketball seniors have been named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State teams.

Columbus East’s Caroline Frost, Jenna Guse and Madelyn Poe; Columbus North’s Olivia Johnson and Kaitlin White; Hauser’s Bella Kilps; Jennings County’s Alexis Carson and Cheyeanna Leslie; Edinburgh’s Kyah Streeval and South Decatur’s Brayley Sundal all were honorable mention girls selections. Jennings’ Cole Sigler made the honorable mention boys list.

Sigler picked for HBCA All-Star Game

Jennings County senior Cole Sigler has been selected to play in the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association All-Star boys game April 7 at Washington High School.

Panthers Juliann Woodard and Alivia Elmore earlier were chosen for the girls game, which will precede the boys game.

Bull Dogs named to All-CI teams

Conference Indiana recently released its All-Conference Indiana teams in girls and boys basketball.

For the Columbus North girls, Kaylie Harmon, Miley McClellan, Hadassah Hurt and Avery Johnson were named to the first team.

For the North boys, Caleb Ferguson was named to the first team, and Garrett Long and Nate Enneking were honorable mention.

Freshman Kaylie Harmon was named the Most Valuable Player at Columbus North’s girls basketball postseason awards banquet.

Paige Terry was named Most Improved, Kaitlin White won the Karen McCaa Memorial Award and Olivia Johnson won the Bull Dog Award.

Berkenstock, Kilps named Jets co-MVPs

Junior Norah Berkenstock and senior Bella Kilps were named co-Most Valuable Players at the Hauser girls basketball postseason awards banquet.

Chloie Phelps and Haven Hartwell were named Most Improved, Mattie Foster won the Junk Yard Dog Award and Kilps won the Jets Award.
