Helen J. Payne

COLUMBUS

Helen J. Payne, 89, of Columbus, “did it her way” and peacefully passed from this earth while asleep at home Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Helen was born July 17, 1934, in Barbourville, Kentucky, the daughter of Granville E. and Florence M. Hammons Kinder. On November 11, 1954, she married the love of her life, Jewell Edward Payne.

Mrs. Payne had an enormous commitment to her family. She managed to hold down the fort with three children while her husband was away on business trips for Cummins Engine Company. The delicious ready to eat meals waiting on the table along with the homemade cakes, cookies and snacks will never be forgotten. Helen loved to nurture and care for her family. Her love for children was never ending. She babysat throughout her life for the neighborhood and loved each one as her own. Helen enjoyed watching those same kids grow throughout the years and tried her best to keep up with what was happening in their adult lives.

Helen was a loving mother, grandmother, friend and generous soul that was indeed, endless inspiration. Her departure has left a huge void within the family, however, we are certain the Lord has claimed another angel. Heaven just got a little sweeter.

Survivors include her children, Steve (Theiry) Payne of Alabama, David Payne of Hope, Becky (T.A.) Smith of Columbus; grandchildren, Jenny Payne of Alabama, Josh (Kourtney) Ivy of Columbus, Amelia (Chris) Comer of Greensburg; great-grandchildren, Foster Ivy, Wyatt Ivy, Daryl Comer and Jacob Comer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jewell; six brothers and sisters; infants, Dwight, Bob and Katherine.

There will be a private family visitation held on Monday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home followed by a graveside committal service for Helen at Flat Rock Baptist Cemetery. She will be laid to rest next her husband, Jewell.
