Allen E. Breed

Allen E. Breed, a resident of Grace Village Retirement Community, Winona Lake, Indiana passed away peacefully at Grace Village Healthcare with family and friends by his side on Monday, March 4, 2024, at the age of 99. His strength, his love for others, and his vitality for life will continue to live through those whom he loved.

He was born on October 4, 1924, in Oakland, California. Allen served in the U.S. Army and proudly served as a combat medic in WWII with the 526th Armored Infantry Battalion, where he received the Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters.

Allen graduated with two biology degrees, a Bachelor’s degree from the University of San Francisco and a M.A. from the University of the Pacific. While at Pacific, he met his wife, Irene and were married in Honolulu, Hawaii. They were blessed with 64 years of marriage, raising their family and sharing their lives until Irene passed away on May 19, 2015.

He attended the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, where he became an ordained United Methodist minister and served in ministry for over 50 years. In addition, he enjoyed educating and taught science classes to countless high school and community college students in California and Hawaii.

Allen lived his life to the fullest and always enjoyed the outdoors. Scuba diving, backpacking, sailing, fishing, square dancing, and playing the trumpet were among his favorite hobbies. Most of all, he will be remembered for his service in the church, his sense of humor, and the love and grace he extended to others.

He will be remembered by his son, Allen (Sandy) Breed, two daughters, Candace (Doug); and Joy (David). Also surviving are a grandson, Evan (Brenda), and granddaughters, Maile (Daniel) and Mikaela. He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Barbara Breed, wife, Irene, brother, John and his daughter, April.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Allen’s life at a memorial service to be held on Friday, April 5, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. at the Grace Village Chapel located at Grace Village Retirement Community, 337 Grace Village Drive, Winona Lake, Indiana and officiated by Rev. Brian Smith. Allen will be laid to rest at a Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Hawaii. Arrangements were entrusted to Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, Indiana.
