After victim ‘devastated’ by trike theft, deputies rolled in to help

Tylor Dowden tries out his new tricycle between Bartholomew County Sheriff Detective Will Kinman and Deputy Tyler Cooper.

Bartholomew County sheriff deputies responded in more ways than one after someone stole an adult tricycle belonging to a man with Down syndrome

At about 4:29 p.m. on Feb. 29, sheriff’s Deputy Tyler Cooper was notified of a theft on Alan Drive. When Cooper arrived on scene and met with Della Dowden, she reported that her son’s tricycle was stolen from her yard during the night of February 28. Dowden gave a description of the tricycle, but deputies were unable to locate it.

“Dowden’s son, Tylor, is 30 years old with Down syndrome and his tricycle is very precious to him. He was absolutely devastated after it was stolen,” the sheriff’s department said in a news release Thursday.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office came together and purchased Tylor a new tricycle and a lock that was delivered to him Tuesday. “He was extremely happy and grateful for his new tricycle,” the release said.

“I’m extremely proud of the members of BCSO that went out of their way to purchase a new tricycle for Tylor,” said Sheriff Chris Lane. “Our deputies not only protect this community, but they truly care about those that they serve.

“A special thanks to Detective Will Kinman for organizing a fundraiser to purchase the tricycle and to all the BCSO staff who contributed.”

Sheriff Chris Lane said, “Tylor, I hope you enjoy your new tricycle, and be safe.”
