North Vernon man found dead in home after fire

NORTH VERNON — A North Vernon man was found dead in his home after a fire last weekend, the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department has announced.

Mark Ramey, 66, of North Vernon, was found dead inside a home after the fire was extinguished.

The sheriff’s department said deputies responded at 11:53 a.m. to a dispatch of a fully engulfed structure fire in Vernon Township. Initial reports suggested the possibility of a person trapped inside the residence, the department said.

Upon arrival, deputies coordinated with fire units from multiple townships to initiate firefighting operations. After the fire was extinguished, investigators from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with personnel from the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, commenced efforts to determine the cause of the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Jennings County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy and public information officer Cody Low.
