COLUMBUS
Duane Eugene Gater, 66, of Columbus, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, March 31, 2024 at his home.
Duane was born July 5, 1957, in Bartholomew County, Indiana, the son of Rollin E. and Kathleen McCleery Gater.
After being in maintenance at Irwin Union Bank, he moved onto the City of Columbus Fire Department in 1991 where he served 15 years until retirement in 2006. In retirement he spent most of his time on the golf course either working or playing. His 6 grandchildren and “Zeke” (his Aussie-Doodle) took the remainder of his time.
Survivors include his daughters, Katie (Aaron) Clark, Emily Mongiello, both of Trafalgar; grandchildren, Emma, Evan and Elsie Clark, Madison, Peyton and Dylan Mongiello and sister, Shelia (David) Swift of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Leon, Robert and Ronnie Gater.
Cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held for Duane at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Luke Maggard officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. Tuesday until the time of service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Columbus Fireman’s Cheer Fund.
