Husband-wife piano duo to present eclipse-themed recital Sunday

Bogdan and Mirabella Minut’s musical hopes will be sky-high Sunday. The husband-wife duo will present “Total Eclipse,” a loosely eclipsed-themed free duet recital at 6 p.m. Sunday at Columbus’ St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, where Bogdan serves as director of music ministry.

Consequently, given that Monday marks a total solar eclipse at about 3 p.m. in Bartholomew County, compositions will include pieces such as Ludvig von Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” and Gustav Holst’s “The Planets” arranged for piano.

A number of other compositions also are scheduled for the concert that is part of the church’s continuing 2023-’24 free concert series. Those include works by Handel, Camille Saint-Saens, Jacques Offenbach and Gustav Mahler.

“Beyond that, we’d like like to surprise people,” Bogdan said.

The series’ last concert featured high-profile Indianapolis vocalist Everett Greene, who has performed nationally. The next concert at 6 p.m. April 22 is in celebration of Earth Day with a program that includes musical selections inspired by Pope Francis’ letters, “Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum,” focusing on themes of care for creation, those in poverty, and solidarity.

All series concerts are free, but donations are welcomed.

Bogdan and Mirabella Minut have performed together a number of times locally. Mirabella serves as music director at Fairlawn Presbyterian Church in Columbus. Bogdan emphasized that music, besides being a tool for enjoyment and relaxation, can be a great element for uniting people in times that frequently can seem divisive.

“Music is particularly such a wonderful platform to express broad feelings for so very many issues and so many themes,” he said. “This recital provides a little bit of fun, and there’s also the idea that some of this music is so very dramatic.

“I think many people will be able to picture themselves viewing the eclipse the next day with much of this music still resonating in their mind and in their soul — all the while maybe thinking of just how small we humans are in the overall, larger scheme of things.”
