College sports notebook: Newell’s 1,500 win helps Navy top Army; Rutan hurls two shutouts

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Matt Newell won the 1,500 meters Saturday to help Navy to a 114-89 win at Army in the outdoor Star Meet.

Newell, a sophomore from Columbus North, finished in 3 minutes, 53.14 seconds.

RICHMOND, Ky. — Maddi Rutan threw her sixth shutout of the season Sunday to lead Eastern Kentucky to a 1-0 ASUN Conference win win against Stetson.

Rutan, a freshman from Columbus North, threw a four-hitter, striking out five with no walks in improving her pitching record to 16-2. She also had an RBI at the plate.

On Saturday, Rutan threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks and had a double and an RBI in a 6-2 win against Stetson in the first game of a doubleheader. She went 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs and pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the save in a 7-6 win in the second game.

Last week, Rutan was named the No. 5 two-way player in the country by SoftballAmerica.

The Colonels (29-5, 11-1) will visit Morehead State for a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Foster notches hits at Clemson

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Kenzie Foster went 2 for 3 Sunday in Syracuse’s 10-1 ACC loss to Clemson.

Foster, a freshman from Columbus East, went 1 for 3 in Saturday’s 13-2 ACC loss to Clemson.

The Orange (16-17, 4-11) will host a doubleheader with Colgate on Wednesday.

Norman helps Marian to wins

Sierra Norman went 2 for 4 Sunday in Marian’s 4-0 first-game Crossroads League win and had an RBI in a 5-4 second-game loss against St. Francis.

Norman, a senior from Columbus North, went 1 for 3 in a 1-0 first-game win and 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI in a 6-2 second-game win Saturday against Huntington.

The Knights (26-6, 14-4) will visit Grace for a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Lemmons records hits in victories

NEW ALBANY — Josie Lemmons went 1 for 1 Friday in IU Southeast’s 8-0 first-game River States Conference win and 2 for 3 with an RBI in a 9-0 second-game win against Alice Lloyd.

Lemmons, a freshman from Columbus North, had a stolen base and two runs scored in Sunday’s 10-0 win against Shawnee State in the second game of an RSC doubleheader.

The Grenadiers (24-11, 18-2) will play a doubleheader at IU Columbus beginning at 2 p.m. Friday at Ceraland.

Greenwell powers Raiders

FAIRBORN, Ohio — Julian Greenwell returned from an injury Friday to go 3 for 5 with a triple, and RBI and four runs scored in Wright State’s 15-12 Horizon League win against Youngstown State.

Greenwell, a fifth-year senior from Columbus East, went 3 for 5 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored in Sunday’s 11-1 win against Youngstown State in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Raiders (18-13, 8-4) will play Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday in Cincinnati.

Burnett gets first win of season

TRENTON, N.J. — Alec Burnett pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season in Wagner’s 4-2 Northeast Conference win against Norfolk State in the first game of a doubleheader.

Burnett, a sixth-year senior from Columbus East, took the loss in a 9-7 second-game defeat. He allowed one hit and two runs, struck out three and walked two in one inning of relief.

Wagner (13-17, 11-4) will visit Iona on Wednesday.

McIntosh collects hits in losses

Kyler McIntosh went 1 for 4 Friday in Alabama State’s 10-2 SWAC loss to Florida A&M.

McIntosh, a junior from Columbus North, also went 1 for 3 in Sunday’s 9-8 loss to Florida A&M.

The Hornets (13-16, 5-6) will visit Auburn at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a game that will be televised on the SEC Network.

Meyer hurls hitless 1 2/3 innings

Jakob Meyer finished off Evansville’s 13-6 win against Austin Peay on Tuesday with a hitless, scoreless ninth inning. He struck out one and walked one.

Meyer, a senior from Columbus North, pitched a perfect final 2/3 of an inning in Sunday’s 12-0 Missouri Valley Conference loss at Belmont.

Harmon helps Iowa Western to 5 wins

Reese Harmon went 2 for 3 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored Sunday in Iowa Western’s 17-0 rout of Kirkwood Community College.

Harmon, a junior from Columbus North, went 1 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs in Saturday’s 3-0 first-game win and went 1 for 4 with two runs scored in an 11-1 second-game win against Kirkwood.

On Thursday, Harmon went 1 for 3 in a 10-0 first-game win and 1 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs scored in an 18-5 second-game win against Southwestern Community College.

The Reivers (32-5) will visit Iowa Lakes Community College on Wednesday.

Taylor picks up fifth save

KASKASKIA, Ill. — Clayton Taylor pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season Saturday in Kaskaskia’s 3-2 win against Shawnee Community College.

Bumbalough records hits, RBIs

WEST LAFAYETTE — Ashlie Wilson was leading her No. 6 singles match 7-6 (9-7), 2-3 Sunday when Purdue clinched its 4-1 Big Ten Conference win against Nebraska.

Boezeman nets two goals in win

Rylie Boezeman scored two goals and had one defensive control Saturday in Marian’s 22-0 lacrosse win against Rochester.

Last weekend, Boezeman, a freshman from Columbus North, had two assists and one caused turnover in a 12-10 loss at No. 7 Indiana Tech.
