South Asian gala set for April 20

The South Asian Network, in collaboration with local community volunteers, will present its second annual gala, titled Mela ‘24 set for 5:30 p.m. April 20 at The Commons, 300 Washington St.

The inaugural event last year sold out and organizers labeled it “a huge success,” according to Raj Subramanian, a member of the organizing committee.

The event will include dinner, music, dancing and more.

The event is a fundraiser for the Bartholomew Consolidated School Foundation.

A statement on the event website at southasiangala.com summarizes organizers’ aim for the gathering: “In recognition of the vibrant South Asian community in Columbus, we are thrilled to (be) … celebrating the cultural wealth of South Asia. This event aims to showcase the talent within our community and share our traditions with the city.”

Subramanian explained his involvement.

“I am passionate about education, which is one of the many reasons I am involved,” he said. “The volunteers invest countless hours to bring the best experience, whether it be culture, food, music, or dance. It always inspires me to see the volume of preparations reach its intense crescendo as we get closer to the date.”

One of the hallmarks of the event is one that has been central to perhaps every major organization and entity in Bartholomew County: inclusivity.

“Inclusivity is at the heart of Mela ‘24, ensuring our events welcome individuals from all walks of life to celebrate diversity,” the website reads.

Individual tickets can be purchased for $100, or a table for eight can be purchased for $700.

Organizers have listed sponsors as: Johnson Ventures, LHP Engineering Solutions, Elwood Staffing, Elwood Foundation, Ryan Hou, Columbus Regional Health, Pyramid Consulting, John Burnett and Kirr, Marbach and Co.
