Donated books will help boost financial literacy

Local financial institutions have donated a number of children’s books that aim to help boost financial literacy among second-and third-graders.

Centra Credit Union, German American Bank and Jackson County Bank each donated $275 for the purchase of books to add to the Book Buddy Program that provided reading tutoring for elementary students in Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. The financial institutions will donate 11 copies each of 12 titles dealing with money matters, said Harriett Armstrong, a co-facilitator of the Bartholomew County Financial Literacy Coalition along with Sandy Allman of the Bartholomew Public Library.

“So often kids don’t hear people talking about” financial literacy, Armstrong said, but the addition of the books can help. She noted that several of the titles deal with situations the children can understand and relate to. One focuses on a child who wishes to buy something for a grandparent, so the child has to think of a project that can raise the money to do so.

The announcement comes during April, which is National Financial Literacy Month. “What a great way to encourage those youth who read every week for their buddy to learn about finances and to talk about the content of the books,” Armstrong said.
