After Harrison Lake Country Club reopened following a renovation, the staff at HLCC and Otter Creek came up with the idea for a tournament involving both courses.

Owner and COO Bob Haddad Jr., director of golf Austin Wright, HLCC pro Aaron Craig, Otter Creek pro Andrew Weisheit and Otter Creek general manager Jimmy St. John discussed different formats and dates before settling on a two-man best-ball team tournament and called it the “Battle For Bartholomew.” This weekend, 64 two-person teams competed in the inaugural event Saturday at Otter Creek and Sunday at HLCC.

“Whatever we did, it worked,” Wright said. “The turnout was great. We were hoping for maybe 25 teams, and to get 64 teams and 128 players is just incredible.”

Former Columbus North golfers Coleman Glick and Bryce Turner staged a big comeback on Sunday to take the title. They were in seventh place after a 4-under-par 68 on Saturday at Otter Creek, but fired an 11-under 60 Sunday at Harrison Lake to finish 15-under for the tournament.

“We were a little disappointed with 4-under (Saturday),” Turner said. “We knew we had to go low today and just ham-and-egged it. We were shooting for 9- or 10-under, and we got to 11 and somehow squeaked it out. I had a great partner this week, and we’re very happy to get it done on our home course.”

Glick and Turner had only one bogey each day, but also had an eagle each day.

“I’d hit a bad shot, and he’d hit a good shot; and vice versa,” Glick said. “We played well on a course we know. The goal is to move on and do it again next year.”

Glick, a 2011 North graduate, played college golf at Tusculum and now works in the family business at Barkes, Weaver and Glick Funeral Home. Turner, a 2017 North grad, played at St. Francis and now works for Donaldson Capital Management.

Both are members at Harrison Lake, the home course of the Bull Dogs, although the course underwent a complete overhaul a couple years ago.

“The design is similar, but the green complexes are completely different,” Glick said.

Two other former North golfers, Ian Coffey and Nick Waskom, were one stroke back at 14-under. Both were part of the Bull Dogs’ state championship team as seniors in 2014 and now live and work in the Indianapolis area.

“It was a reason to get out and practice a little bit and try to get the game back in shape,” said Coffey, who played college golf at St. Francis. “It’s great to see a lot of familiar faces.”

“We were pumped,” added Waskom, who played at Taylor. “We’ve been talking about it for months. We were really looking forward to it.”

Three teams tied for third at 12-under — Kyle Crites and Justin Smith of Indianapolis, former North golfers Jake Coffey and Michael VanDeventer and former Otter Creek pro Jon Hoover and Rafael Cordero.

Former Columbus East and Bethel College player Drew Day and former Hauser coach Heath Harrison, who shared the first-round lead with Hoover and Cordero at 7-under, finished sixth at 8-under. Former East coach Tom LaBarbara and Kevin Merritt took seventh at 7-under.

The top female team — Alexandrea Marris of Franklin and her former coach at Terre Haute South, Cara Stuckey — finished eighth at 4-under. Former East golfers Derek Alexander and Adam Krebs were ninth at 3-under. Tying for 10th were teams of Tanner Bennett/JK Keach, Lance Hackman/Matt Hackman and Chase Elwood/Cameron Miller.

Meanwhile, in the Net Division, Braydon Gill and Dawson Paul took the title at 21-under. Three teams tied for second at 18-under — Lance and Matt Hackman, Carl and Jordan Butler and Dave Gross/Matt Steinwedel. BJ Bingham and Drew Denny finished fifth at 17-under.
