Britt files seeking BCSC board seat

A Columbus resident with a long career in education has filed paperwork to run for Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. school board in this fall’s election.

Leigh W. Britt filed paperwork to run for the BCSC School Board District 5 seat, which is currently held by Pat Bryant.

Bryant told The Republic last year that he does not plan to seek re-election, citing his age as one of the factors in his decision.

“I’ve been on the board for almost 13, 14 years,” Bryant said last year. “So, it’s time for me to relinquish my space and let someone else get in there and do the right thing.”

Britt has been with IU Columbus since 1994, The Republic reported last year. Prior to that, she taught math at Lloyd C. Bird High School in Chesterfield, Virginia, from 1990 to 1992 and Columbus North High School from 1992 to 1994.

Britt was the second person to file to run for BCSC school board during the first week of the candidate filing period, according to the Bartholomew County Clerk’s Office.

On Tuesday, Turning Point President Whittney Loyd filed paperwork to run for the BCSC School Board District 3 seat, according to the Bartholomew County Clerk’s Office. The District 3 seat is currently held by Todd Grimes.

Several school board seats will be on the ballot this year, including BCSC School Board District 3, 5 and 7. Nicole Wheeldon holds the District 7 seat.

Additionally, the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Board seats held by Matt Bruner and Brian Rose are open for filing.

The filing period ends June 20, according to the Bartholomew County Clerk’s Office.

People who are interested in running for a school board seat must file a petition of nomination with 10 signatures of registered voters.

For the BCSC school board, the signatures can come from any registered voter in the BCSC school district, while for Flat Rock-Haw Creek, the signatures must come from registered voters in the school board district in which the candidate is running, according to Bartholomew County Clerk Shari Lentz.
