Rock the Park replaces operating budget dollars

Donors to the nonprofit Columbus Area Arts Council have replaced about $30,000 the nonprofit agency pulled from its operating budget to help pay expenses from the rain-canceled Rock the Park event.

The Aug. 6 event, which was to feature 1970s disco act KC and the Sunshine Band, was canceled just before the gates were scheduled to open at Mill Race Park in Columbus amid a rainstorm that also included some lightning.

“I’m grateful to the community,” said Kathryn Armstrong, the arts council’s executive director. “And it shows the great place we live in to rally around something like this.”

The future of the event is on hold until arts council leaders discuss the matter and options later this year. Rock the Park concerts of most recent years were successful gatherings attracting 6,000 to 7,000 people.

The arts council’s biggest fundraiser of each year, unCommon Cause, is Oct. 22 at The Commons.
