Driver named for Stewart-supported Indy 500 entry

COLUMBUS, Ind. — This year’s Indianapolis 500 entry formed through Tony Stewart’s foundation has chosen a driver with experience at the famed Brickyard and an open-wheel racing background.

Jay Howard, 36, will drive for the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports No. 77 car in the 101st Indianapolis 500 on May 28. Schmidt Peterson Motorsports teamed with Team One Cure, a program of the Tony Stewart Foundation, to create the entry. Team One Cure seeks potential cancer cures for humans and pets.

Howard, born in Basildon, England, started racing go-karts at age 7. He competed in the 2011 Indianapolis 500, starting 20th and finishing 30th.
