Wildlife refuge hosting butterfly count

Staff Reports

Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge will host its annual butterfly count at 8 a.m. Aug. 4.

At least 40 species of butterflies have been spotted during the survey in each of the previous counts, according to a news release.

Those attending should meet at the refuge office. The refuge, 1661 W. Jpg Niblo Road, Madison, is especially interested in counting monarch butterflies, whose populations have recently plummeted.

A $3 donation to the North American Butterfly Association would be appreciated for those participating in the count. Survey teams will be divided up based on the length of time you wish to spend in the field.

Bring water, bug spray, sunscreen, snacks or lunch and binoculars. Long pants are recommended. Butterfly field guides are recommended, but not required.
