East conducting auditions for fall play

Columbus East High School students may audition for the school’s fall play this week.

Auditions for the play, “Somewhere, Nowhere,” will be Tuesday and Wednesday after school until 5 p.m. Callbacks are scheduled for Thursday after school until 5 p.m.

The play will be performed at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10, and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 11. For more information, contact East auditorium director Kevin Welsh at welshk@bcsc.k12.in.us.

Student attends camp at space, rocket center

A Columbus student recently graduated from space camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Davis Bishop attended the Elite Advanced Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, as part of a week-long educational program that promotes science, technology, engineering and math.

The program also trains students with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and problem solving, according to a news release.

Author to visit with middle school students this month

Author Saundra Mitchell will meet with seventh- and eighth-grade students at Central Middle School this month.

Mitchell will discuss writing and publishing novels with students in language arts teacher Mindy Summers’ classroom on Sept. 10.

Local student named All American cheerleader

A seventh-grade student at Central Middle School has been named as an All American cheerleader by the Universal Cheerleaders Association.

Arlynn Fleming, 12, received the designation in June by the organization after she tried out during a summer camp held at Central.

Fleming, who previously cheered at Southside Elementary School, will participate in different events with the association, including the Philadelphia Thanksgiving parade.
