Veterans Day-related events slated at library

Staff Reports

The Bartholomew County Public Library annually devotes the month of November to honoring veterans because of Veterans Day, observed Nov. 11. This year’s Veterans Day-related events at the facility at 536 Fifth St. in Columbus include:

Heroes’ Tree: Make an ornament in honor of a veteran and place it on one of the Heroes Trees located at the main entrance and in the children’s department.

Military Displays: Military uniforms, medals and other items on the library’s main floor.

Free book purchase for veterans: In recognition of their service, they may select a free book in the ongoing book sale area.

Christmas Cards for Camp Atterbury USO office: Soldiers don’t always have access to greeting cards, which makes it difficult to stay connected with family and friends at home. During November, the library staff is asking people to donate blank Christmas cards which they will take to the Camp Atterbury USO in early December to be available to soldiers stationed there. Drop your cards at the main library or at the Hope Branch Library.

Military reenactors: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10, and view uniforms from the Civil War to World War II and accompanying weapons and gear.

Women Heroes of World War I: 6 p.m. Nov. 12 in the Red Room, where author Kathryn Atwood will explore the contributions made by women during the first World War. Included will be dozens of archival photos, readings from Atwood’s book, “Women Heroes of World War I,” and an audience question-and-answer session. The program is for teens and adults.

Showing of the 2017 Oscar-winning movie “Dunkirk,” 6 p.m. Nov. 20: Depicts the evacuation of Dunkirk, France during World War II.
