Woman who jumped from burning vehicle in critical condition

A Columbus woman who jumped from a burning, moving vehicle is in critical condition at an Indianapolis hospital.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a report of a vehicle fire with injury on southbound U.S. 31, south of County Road 300E, at about 10:29 a.m. Thursday, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Judy Jackson said.

The driver, Robert A. Shaw II, saw smoke coming from the interior of his vehicle. As he slowed to stop, his passenger — Karlee Katelynn Hurt, 22 — jumped from the vehicle while it was still moving at about 30 mph, Jackson said.

Hurt was treated at the scene before being transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital. She was in critical condition as of Friday afternoon, a hospital spokesperson said.

The vehicle was a total loss, Jackson said.
