Vectren crews begin gas line work

Crews for Vectren Energy are starting to replace gas mains and service lines throughout Indiana, including in Columbus.

The company is planning to replace about 1,200 miles of bare steel and cast-iron pipeline infrastructure in 26 cities, with crews retiring 80 miles of pipeline through a nearly $51 million investment.

Cities that will have work this year include Columbus, Bloomington, Bedford and Greenfield, among others. An interactive map is available at vectren.com/pipeline replacement where existing and upcoming work is shown.

In most cases, a polyethylene (plastic) system is being installed to replace current bare steel and cast-iron gas pipelines. Crews will replace the gas main, which is a gas pipeline that ranges in size from 2 inches to 8 inches, often underneath a street or sidewalk, and then the service lines running to homes and businesses. Affected yards, sidewalks and streets will be restored.

A Vectren representative will contact customers prior to work beginning near their homes.
