Board approves bid for People Trail expansion

The Columbus Board of Public Works has approved a bid to extend the Columbus People Trail along McKinley Avenue to Clifty Park.

The bid was submitted by Seymour-based All Star Paving for $233,012 in construction costs. The company’s bid was the lowest of the six bids the city received, said Dave Hayward, executive director of public works/city engineer.

The Clifty Trail project includes a 10-foot-wide asphalt trail from the intersection of Marr Road and McKinley Avenue to Clifty Park. The trail would run east for about a quarter of a mile before turning south for 1,500 feet until reaching Clifty Park. Additionally, a drinking fountain and a bench would be built on the south side of the trail.

“The work should start within the next month and it’ll be completed sometime this year, hopefully by mid-summer so people can use it this summer,” Hayward said.

Hot mix asphalt for $66,760, construction engineering for $41,458, a curb ramp for $17,010 and tree clearing and grubbing for $10,500 were the top construction expenses listed in the bid. Additionally, All Star Paving has estimated that the bench would cost $3,300 and the drinking fountain would cost $4,000, according to the bid.

The project will receive approximately $150,000 in funding for construction from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and around $160,000 from the Columbus Park Foundation, Hayward said.

Other companies that submitted bids were Milestone Contractors for $244,000, Robertson Paving for $268,817, King’s Trucking for $276,256, Globe Asphalt for $276,748 and Force Construction for $325,000.
