Hope to begin long-awaited storm sewer repair

HOPE —  A long-awaited upgrade of a collapsing storm sewer under Washington Street, next to the Hope Town Square, will begin Monday.

Originally, town leaders wanted repairs on the nearly 100-year-old system under Washington Street to extend from State Road 9 (Main Street) four blocks east to near the Community Center of Hope.

But after failing to secure a $608,000 state grant, the town decided in February to utilize their own funds to finance a scaled-back version of storm sewer work from Main to Harrison Street. The town is using money from their Stormwater Utility Fund, as well as revenue from Hope’s portion of the economic development income tax, to finance the project.

In May, the town council unanimously accepted the low bid from Roy Holman Excavating LLC of Versailles to do the work for $172,166. Crews will only be on site from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Robertson said.
