Motorcyclist jailed after traffic stop

Robert G. Schonfeld

Staff Reports

Columbus police, assisted by an off-duty Bartholomew County Sheriff deputy, arrested a Flat Rock man on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, Columbus police received a report of a possible impaired motorcyclist in the 9000 block of 25th Street.

An off-duty Bartholomew County deputy observed the motorcycle near 25th Street and Taylor Road and with the assistance of a CPD officer, stopped it, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers identified the driver as Robert G. Schonfeld, 64, of 9275 S. Geneva Road, Flat Rock, Harris said.

While speaking with Schonfeld, the officers noted that his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. Schonfeld was given a portable breath test and provided a breath sample of .125%, Harris said.

Schonfeld later advanced towards the officers and struck one them in the hand before being restrained, Harris said. While searching Schonfeld’s clothing, the officers reportedly located a large bag of marijuana.

The officers applied for and later received a search warrant for a blood draw after Schonfeld refused to submit to a chemical intoxication test, Harris said. Upon his discharge from the hospital, Schonfeld was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following preliminary charges:

Felony battery on a public safety official

Felony possession of marijuana (over 30 grams and with a prior conviction)

Misdemeanor operating a vehicle while intoxicated-endangerment

Schonfeld was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bond, jail officials said.
