Flat Rock-Hawcreek reports enrollment increase

HOPE — Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. continues to grow its student population, welcoming 39 additional students this year and bumping up its total enrollment to 942.

Since 2015, the eastern Bartholomew County school district has gained more than 100 students as a result of consistent increases each year. That steady trend upward comes after five straight years of continuous decreases.

“For us, 39 students may sound like a small number, but to be up as a small rural school is important,” said Shawn Price, Flat Rock-Hawcreek superintendent. “There’s not too many districts around us that you’ll find showing growth over a period of five years. We’re really proud of that.”

Price contributes the growth partly to a much larger kindergarten class than usual, requiring the district to add a fourth section of kindergarten at Hope Elementary School. More families are also moving into the area, leaving the district with its highest number of transfer students ever, he said.
