Columbus Police Department has scheduled its SAFE classes for 2020.
SAFE, which stands for “Situational Awareness for Everyday,” is training offered by the department in a one-day safety course that was initially designed for high school senior girls, and this year being expanded to be offered for the first time to high school senior boys.
The addition of the class for males was a response to requests from the community, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The boy’s SAFE class is planned at Columbus East High School on March 3. The girl’s course will also be at East, on March 4.
The popular course is taught by officers from the Columbus Police Department and Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department.
This is the sixth year the program has been offered to local students.
During the day-long course, Harris said law enforcement officers will provide tips and information on how students can be safe next year at college as well as away from school.
The afternoon class sessions are dedicated to basic physical tactics. Lunch is provided free to the participants during the session.
There is no charge to attend one of the sessions.
All seniors from Columbus Signature Academy New Tech, Columbus Christian School and Hauser High School are encouraged to sign up to the courses at Columbus East.
A class is also planned at Columbus North High School on March 9 for 12th grade girls who attend there. A separate SAFE class for boys is also planned on a date to be determined later this school year.
Students who are interested in signing up for a SAFE class should contact their school guidance office to register.
