Fire damaged a home at 222 Jones St. on Columbus’ east side Friday morning.
Columbus firefighters were sent there at about 10:05 a.m. where they found black smoke coming out of the front of the one-story frame home, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.
Shana Albert, who lived in the home, told investigators that her son was outside the home working on a vehicle and when he returned inside the home, he discovered fire in a bedroom, Wilson said. Albert told investigators that she was on her way home from work to assist her son in jump starting a vehicle with a dead battery when she got the call about the fire.

Investigators spoke with Albert’s son who stated that he saw a small fire in his mother’s bedroom, and attempted to put out the fire with a bucket of water. With the attempt to extinguish unsuccessful, Albert’s son retrieved two pet dogs from the home, called 911, and waited the arrival of firefighters.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters used ventilation fans to remove smoke from the home.
Columbus Fire Department investigators are investigating the cause, Wilson said. No injuries were reported during the incident. Due to the damage to the home, the family will be displaced. No working smoke alarms were located in the home. The Salvation Army is proving emergency shelter assistance to the family at this time. Damages to the home and contents are estimated at $4,000.
Agencies that assisted at the scene included the Columbus Police Department, Columbus Regional Health EMS, Vectren Energy, Duke Energy and Columbus City Utilities.
