BROWNSTOWN
Helen Jean Carter, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown, Indiana. She was a former resident of Columbus, Kurtz, and Nashville, Indiana.
Helen was born on September 1, 1928, in Summerville, Indiana. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie (Stephenson) Ahlemann. She graduated Salutatorian from Oakland City, Indiana High School in 1946. She married Sherman Carter on June 18, 1946.
Helen went to work for Columbus Regional Hospital in 1965 as a nurse’s aide. She went back to school and received her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree, 1967, an Associate Nursing Degree, 1979, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marion College, 1984, graduating Sum Cum Lade. She received the Who’s Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges from Marian College in 1982-83 for outstanding merits and accomplishments as a student. In 1984 she received her Master of Science Nursing from Indiana University, and 1985, 1986, and 1987 she went on to receive her Adult Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Gerentilogical Nurse Practitioner Degrees from Indiana University. In 1985 she received the Academic Achievement Award from Indiana University School of Nursing for receiving an A in every course taken while in Graduate School. She continued working at Columbus Regional Hospital until 2010 and was a Nurse Educator when she retired.
Helen was affiliated with the American Heart Association, teaching CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support to Nursing Students, EMT’s, Firemen, Teachers, Paramedics and military personnel at Camp Atterbury. She was a member of the American Nursing Association.
Helen was a member of The Kurtz Nazarene Church, she enjoyed traveling and many hobbies such as camping, square dancing, playing the piano, writing and spending time with all her family and friends.
Helen is survived by her children Jane (Danny) Roth, Rick (Becky) Carter and Anthony “Tony” (Gail) Carter, (15) Grandchildren, (23) Great Grandchildren and (9) Great, Great Grandchildren and surviving Sister Esther Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her husband Sherman, her mother and father, Arthur and Bessie Ahlemann, and 5 brothers, William, Ralph, Thomas, Raymond and Charles Ahlemann, and 3 sisters, Dorothy Ahlemann, Ethel Strickland, and Mary Hawthorne.
The funeral will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike with Rev. Ron Walker officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
