Letter: Tired of tears, fears, and rage: Shootings demand action

Even before all of the victims of the Buffalo, N.Y., massacre were laid to rest, we learned Tuesday of yet another mass shooting, this time in an elementary school. Once again I’m feeling equal parts rage and grief, and I’m sick of feeling rage and grief.

In this country we tend to idolize our Founding Fathers. I’ve read quite a bit about the founding of our country, and this much I know: the Founders disagreed on many issues and some of them despised each other, but they managed to hammer out a compromise to guide this infant country. That framework is, of course, the Constitution. They were humble enough to know they didn’t have all the answers and wise enough to know that future generations would face problems they couldn’t imagine, but they left a Constitution that would allow our elected leaders to create solutions, as they themselves had done in our country’s beginning.

If the Founders could see the blight of gun violence today — innocent people being murdered as they do their weekly grocery shopping, little children and their teachers being gunned down during their school day — they would scream at our elected leaders: “Fix this! We gave you the tools. Use them to make your country better.”

I’m tired of the fear, the tears, the rage. I’m tired of the inevitable “thoughts and prayers,” but no action from our elected leaders.

Please, please, let this latest assault be the catalyst for serious action. Our heartbroken country deserves no less.
