Columbus firefighters were called to 32 Reo St. on Sunday night on a storage shed fire behind a residence.
Columbus firefighters were called to 32 Reo St. at 10:48 p.m. Sunday on a building fire behind a residence.
When firefighters arrived, they found a fully-involved storage building fire behind a single family home, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.
Two adults with two small children were outside of the residence. No injuries were reported.
The fire’s intense heat was causing fire to extend to the rear of the home, which was about 10 feet from the storage building, Wilson said.
Firefighters quickly applied water to building fire to prevent further fire extension to the home. As additional firefighters arrived on the scene, a second hose line was used to attack flames that were threatening the home. Within a short time the fire was brought under control.
The rental property sustained extensive damage to the exterior of the home near the storage building. Firefighters reported visible damage in an interior room at the rear of the home. Heavy smoke conditions were found inside the home, Wilson said.
Firefighters used ventilation fans to remove the smoke. Due to the fire, smoke, and water damage within the residence, the occupants of the rental home were displaced and are receiving emergency shelter assistance from the Salvation Army.
Damages to the property are estimated at $15,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Agencies that assisted include the Columbus Police Department, Columbus Regional Health Ambulance Service, Bartholomew County Emergency Dispatch Center, Columbus City Utilities, CenterPoint Energy, Duke Energy and the Salvation Army.
