Ballots for the May 3 primary election, and in some cases the November general election, are shaping up after the candidate filing deadline passed last week. Voters will have choices in numerous competitive races at the local, state and federal level in the spring party primaries and in the fall general election.

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is the largest peacetime alliance in the world and has been arguably the most successful such alliance in history. It has had remarkable success in achieving its basic goals: containing Soviet expansion, checking the rise of nationalism and helping integrate Europe.

Because I am an old man, snow scares me. Sometimes, I think it is downright evil.

My 70 years on this mortal coil have seen changes unimaginable, to be sure. Cell phones, self-driving cars, video conferencing, countless TV channels, etc. This was the stuff of the Jetsons cartoons. Even the robotic maid Rosey is no longer futuristic.

Remember that snowstorm, when everything shut down for a couple of days earlier this month, then the sun eventually warmed enough to melt it away? We wouldn’t blame you if you chose to forget it, spring being (we hope) right around the corner.
