In the coming months, the Supreme Court will issue its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, and legal experts widely expect the Court to severely curtail — or even overturn altogether — the 50 year precedent that established every woman’s right to determine if they will give birth.

If that happens, 36 million people across the country will lose access to abortion.

Far-right state legislatures are ready for this. We have to be ready, too. In anticipation of the Court’s decision, conservative state legislatures across the country are already passing restrictions to block access to safe and legal abortions. Already in 2022, 519 anti-abortion restrictions have been introduced in 41 states. After Texas effectively banned abortion after 6 weeks of pregnancy, abortion providers in neighboring states like Oklahoma saw a massive influx of patients seeking care they couldn’t receive in their own state. Now those states are passing restrictions of their own, putting necessary medical care farther and farther out of reach.
