After three years on hiatus, the Historic Eleutherian College (HEC) will open to the public for its annual Fall Gathering on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the college grounds at 6927 W. State Route 250 in Lancaster, Ind.

The public is invited to return to the College to reminisce, to dream, and tell stories. Throughout the day, guests will be able to tour the National Historic Landmark  and see the recent restoration work to the three-story stone building, completed in 1856. The work has been funded by grants from the Indiana Historical Society. and the Dovie Stewart Cox * Chester A. Cox Memorial Fund and Stanford H. Cox Fund, Funds of CICF.

Guests also can catch up on the latest plans HEC has for returning to the founders’ original mission of education, including a  new outdoor classroom built by Ben Hardin and funded by a Lilly Scholars Lead Forward Community Grant.

Information also will be available about the Summer Science Institute, which premiered in June. The goal of the institute is to prepare and recruit high school students to become teachers in the STEM subjects: Science, technology, engineering and math. This year’s pilot program was funded by the Community Foundation of Madison and Jefferson County.

HEC continues its research to unearth the accomplishments of students who attended the school in the past – in mid-1800s and in the late 1800s to 1939, when the building housed the township school for Lancaster. Presentations during the event will reveal the latest research findings on families with ties to HEC.

Come reconnect with HEC; share family stories, old notebooks and memories about Eleutherian College and the community around it. Bring a picnic lunch or enjoy a hotdog on the grounds.  Watch old videos or sing favorite songs in the auditorium. Bring your camera or paint brushes and capture the spirit of this special place any time on Saturday, October 15, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

More details will be posted on our website: Eleutherian-college.org. Historic Eleutherian College is a National Historic Landmark and is part of the National Park Service’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
