COLUMBUS, Ind. — A Pontiac G6 reported stolen in 2017 from Jackson County was recovered following a traffic stop and arrest Thursday night in Columbus.
Columbus Police Department officers arrested the driver of the vehicle, who was identified as Kyra S. Anderson, 28, of 611 Garden St., Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Ind. — County Road 400 North, from U.S. 31 east to the bridge, will be closed through Saturday afternoon so the new pavement can be striped and the project completed, the Columbus Engineering Department said.
Milestone is paving the road today. Drivers will need to find an alternate route.
The plan to pave last week was canceled due to the weather.
COLUMBUS, Ind. — Deer hunters can begin registering Monday for deer hunts with participating landowners and for reserved deer hunts through programs administered by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Fish & Wildlife.
The new Deer Hunt Registry system connects deer hunters with landowners, golf courses, parks, land trusts, farmers and communities. For more information or to sign up, go online at on.IN.gov/deerhuntregistry.
Deer hunters can apply online for a reserved hunt at on.IN.gov/reservedhunt.Deer. The online method is the only way to apply, the DNR said.

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Cummins Inc. announced today that it has entered into an agreement to purchase a company that develops and manufactures fuel cell modules and hydrogen generation equipment.
Columbus-based Cummins, a global diesel engine maker and power systems manufacturer is continuing its foray into alternative power systems with the purchase of Hydrogenics Corporation.
Cummins has agreed to purchase, through a wholly-owned subsidiary, all the issued and outstanding shares of Hydrogenics for $15 per share in cash, representing a value of about $290 million, Cummins said.

Kristen Brown
COLUMBUS, Ind. — A judge has ruled in favor of former Columbus Mayor Kristen Brown in her lawsuit against the Columbus Police Department involving her public-records request for information related to an incident involving two Bartholomew County government employees, a parole supervisor and jail commander.
Brown filed the lawsuit Feb. 17, 2017 after she said the police department failed to comply with her request for information related to the Sept. 8, 2016 incident.
Special Judge Richard Poynter, from Jackson County, ruled June 17 that “Brown has ‘substantially prevailed’ in her action” and that “CPD shall pay Brown’s reasonable attorney’s fees, court costs, and expenses incurred in this matter,” according to the court document.
In the ruling, Poynter said, “The Court agrees with the Public Access Counselor that the CPD provided ‘insufficient detail’ to Brown in response to her public records request.”
Poynter, however, did not assess a $100 civil penalty that could have been levied, according to state law.

Duncan tied for 122nd after opening-round 72
Tyler Duncan carded an even-par 72 in Thursday’s opening round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Duncan, a 2008 Columbus North graduate, was 2-under after five holes, but ended up with even-par 36s on both nines at Detroit Golf Club. He is tied for 122nd place and will need a strong round today to make the cut.
Nate Lashley leads the tournament after a 9-under 63. Ryan Armour and Nick Watney are one shot back at 8-under 64.
Otter Creek hosting local AJGA qualifier
A local qualifier for next week’s American Junior Golf Association Circle K Junior Championship hosted by Otter Creek will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Otter Creek.
The cost for the qualifier is $25. Boys or girls ages 14 to 18 who have not started college can call the pro shop to get their name on the list to play and can sign up at the course on Saturday morning.
One boy and one girl from Saturday’s qualifier will earn the right to play in the tournament, which is Tuesday through July 4 at Otter Creek. Incoming juniors Kody Reynolds of Columbus East and Nathaly Munnicha of Columbus North are the locals who already are entered in next week’s tournament.
The regular AJGA Tournament qualifier is on Sunday morning, and the field for that is full.
There will be a junior golf clinic at 1 p.m. Monday. Kids can register at 12:30 p.m. and will receive a hot dog, chips and Polar Pop from Circle K.
Because of an influx of donations, local organizers have added Foundation For Youth as a second charitable partner. The First Tee remains as a charitable partner.
The Columbus Volleyball Academy has come a long way since its development two years ago.
Last week, the CVA 14-1 team finished runner-up in the 14-and-under division of the AAU Junior National Volleyball Championship in Orlando, Florida.
The 14U tournament featured 64 teams represented by nearly all 50 states and Puerto Rico. CVA head coach Stacie Pagnard said it was a great competitive experience for the girls to prepare for future high school competition.
“It gives them a better understanding of what is expected and the style of play to where they can transition seamlessly,” said Pagnard, also the coach at Columbus East. “It can help bridge that gap better once they get to high school.”

Megan Tracy, Saige Stahl and Chloe Gilley and were named All-American following the tournament.
“The wins weren’t easy, and every game, you had to put everything into it that you had,” said Tracy, an incoming freshman at East. “I don’t think there was a lot of game where we could sit back, so we had to keep on our toes the entire game.”
CVA finished 12-1, with its only loss coming in the championship match. A few of the teams that CVA had to face in the tournament represented states like Florida, Texas, Georgia, Virginia and North Carolina.
“It was probably some of the best teams we’ve seen this season,” said Stahl, who will be a freshman at East. “We were definitely prepared to come out and play those teams.”
The tournament also provided a lot of fun.
“It was crazy. There was a lot of people there,” said Gilley, who will be an eighth-grader at Central Middle School. “There were people from everywhere. We even played a team from Puerto Rico. It was very exciting.”
Besides Tracy and Stahl, five other team members — Quarin Bailey, Libby Dippold, Allison Gribbins, Laney Smith and Erin Williams — will be freshmen at East. Caroline Frost and Jenna Guse will join Gilley as eighth-graders at Central. Cali Cummings will be a freshman at Seymour.
“It’s not about North; it’s not about East; it’s all about developing kids in this community — that’s what I care about,” CVA director Terry Sweasy said. “That is what I want to grow on and that’s what I want to continue to do.”
The CVA has become more diverse since its beginning, with players outside of Columbus starting to become involved with the club.
“Locally, what we are trying to do with this club is make it a big-time club and not just a small, local club,” Sweasy said. “We’re trying to develop a club into a big-time club where we are the Munciana of Columbus, Indiana, so that parents can get an earlier idea of what playing competitive and playing in big tournaments and doing the things that we do during the season that they haven’t had the opportunity to do before without going to Indianapolis or Louisville. So, we want to provide them with an opportunity here locally to help save them time and money.”
