Grizzly Cubs top Jets in OT

FRANKLIN — Missed opportunities hurt the Hauser boys basketball team Saturday night.

Two free throws and a layup with 6 seconds left by Jacob Rockey lifted host Franklin to an 82-78 overtime win over the Jets.

What could have been an upset win for Hauser was ruined when Cory Richards hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer in regulation to tie the score at 69. Jets assistant coach Griff Roth didn’t need to be reminded of that.

“If (Richards) doesn’t hit the shot, we’re talking about winning a game, but we’re not,” Roth said. “I thought we played really well, and we had some good defense and fought hard. I’m very proud of the guys.”

The win was the Grizzly Cubs’ fifth straight against Hauser (2-3), but from the beginning, this game would not emulate the previous battles, including last season’s 25-point Franklin win on the Jets’ home court.

But it was the missed opportunities that plagued Hauser. Whether it was a 10-foot jumper, easy layup, a botched attempt at a slam dunk or free throws, the Jets didn’t make the most of their chances in the first half.

Especially free throws.

Hauser missed eight free throws, five of them in the first half, that would ultimately determine the outcome.

The Grizzly Cubs (4-0) made the most of theirs, going 14 for 17 from the line. The Jets also committed 20 turnovers to Franklin’s 10, yet were still able to keep the game close.

No team had more than a five-point lead the entire game.

“I thought Hauser outplayed us at times,” Franklin coach Brad Dickey said. “They made us work hard.”

Both teams exhibited patience more than panic — even during crunch time with the game in the balance. The game was tied at 32 at the half, and the chess match continued well into the second half with each team patiently setting up plays and taking the shot.

The Jets were much better shooting the ball in the second half. So were the Cubs.

Hauser appeared to have the game in its favor with a three-point lead 65-62 with 1:35 left in regulation. A short spurt by Franklin cut that lead, but the Jets’ Alex Gross hit two clutch free throws with 17.2 seconds left to give the Jets 69-66 lead.

That set up Richards’ heroics.

Gross led all scorers with 27 points. Connor Wilson added 18 for Hauser, while Mason Sherman had 15 and Justin Compton 11.

Olympians struggle to stop Silver Creek

SELLERSBURG — Columbus East struggled to stop Silver Creek’s guard penetration on Saturday night and lost its second game in two days.

Cameron Stephens and Zane Gross combined for 39 points to lead the Dragons to a 56-47 win against the Olympians.

Gross led all scorers with 20 points and shot 100 percent from the free-throw line. Zach Pierce provided another nine points for Silver Creek, which outscored East in three of the four quarters.

“Our guys battled,” East coach Brent Chitty said. “I think their guard (Stephens) is a wonderful young basketball player. He can shoot it well, he runs the team well and plays with great composure. He’s a nice player.”

Jonathan Foster and Max Nolting scored 15 points apiece to lead the Olympians. Foster also had a handful of steals in the fourth quarter for East (1-2), which tried to force a comeback late in the game.

Tanner McFall scored 11 points and played solid defense, forcing three steals and a blocked shot. The only other scores for East came from Chaz Painter’s five points and Thomas Myers’ one free-throw.

The Olympians struggled at the line, hitting only five of their 13 free throws.

“We have to knock some shots down, and our kids know that,” Chitty said. “We just have to keep working hard.”

The Dragons (4-2) outrebounded the Olympians 27-17 which allowed multiple second chance opportunities. Silver Creek was in control for most of the game.

East struggled to knock down shots but still managed to make six 3-pointers.

Saturday’s game was the Olympians’ third in five days to begin the season. The school’s football success gave them a late start to the basketball season, and Chitty says they have time to get better.

“Everybody else kind of got a little head start on us,” Chitty said. “We’re hoping that we get better as we go through next week.”

East has five days off before it plays its next game Friday at crosstown rival Columbus North.

East boys take second in relays

SHELBYVILLE — The Columbus East boys swimmers were in third place for most of Saturday’s Shelbyville Relays, but had a chance to claim the title with a win in the final race.

The host Golden Bears won that last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay to hold on for the team victory with 96 points. The Olympians finished second in the final race to take second overall with 90.

“It’s been a few years since I’ve seen swimmers so truly excited about what they did and almost did,” East boys coach David Fribley said.

The Olympians won two events. Griff McGaha, Bryce Eckelman, Evan Wieneke and Austin Smith took the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1 minute, 40.55 seconds; and Ryan Singer, Bryce Gibson and Zack Statler captured the 150 breaststroke relay in 1:43.61.

East’s girls finished third with 80 points. Pendleton Heights won with 132 to 88 for Batesville.

The Olympians were without top swimmer Cortney VanLiew, who is in New York for the Wendy’s High School Heisman ceremony and activities. East got a win from Taylor Smith, Lizzy Frazier and Annie Frazier in the 150 backstroke relay (1:34.56).

Olympians’ rally comes up short

JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus East dug itself into an early hole, scoring only 13 first half points in its Hoosier Hills Conference matchup at Jeffersonville.

The Red Devils led for most of the game in their 43-39 win against the Olympians. East could not find the basket in the first quarter and went into halftime with a 24-13 deficit.

“We couldn’t throw it in the ocean for three quarters,” East coach Danny Brown said. “We were trying to find the right combination of kids who could play good defense and score. I think we found it at the end.”

Jeffersonville (7-4, 4-0) started the fourth quarter with its largest lead of 15 points, but then something began to click for the Olympians (5-3, 1-1). Riley Meade found her rhythm, knocking down three 3-pointers and scoring 11 of her 13 points in the final quarter.

East scored 21 points in the fourth after scoring just 18 in the first three periods combined.

“We keep fighting, and everybody saw it tonight,” Meade said. “We never give up, and it showed. It was a really good quarter. We just know that we have to play like that the whole 32 minutes.”

Britney Ballard had a solid fourth quarter, knocking down three clutch free throws down the stretch to help the Olympians take a one-point lead in the final two minutes. She led all scorers with 14 points and went 5 for 5 from the line.

Addy Galarno scored a crucial bucket late in the fourth to keep East’s hopes alive. Five of her seven points come off free-throws.

“We had the lead twice and needed to pull it back out and run our offense, but both times we had the lead we threw it away,” Brown said. “But I am extremely proud of the effort to come back and take the lead. We just couldn’t hold on.”

The Olympians still had a chance after having two costly turnovers in the final minute-and-a-half, but some poised free-throw shooting from Jeffersonville’s Jaylynn Brown helped put it away. Brown hit all four of her fourth quarter free-throws to maintain the three-point lead.

East had the ball with 11 seconds left with a chance to tie the game on a 3-point shot, but another turnover gave the ball back to the Red Devils.

“I think if we play in the first quarter how we did in the fourth, then we will have a great end our season going into the tournament,” Meade said.

Relays meet brings out fun in swim teams

The Columbus North swimmers will start having more intense training as they prepare for the second half of the season and the postseason.

On Saturday at the Columbus North Relays, however, it was all about having fun.

It was quite a different format style that fans are used to seeing in a regular meet. Some of the races featured the typical freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly relays.

There was a race that included an individual medley done in reverse order. Another race featured was the 1,000-yard freestyle relay with only three swimmers, with the first and third swimmers swimming 250 and the middle swimmer going 500.

One of the more interesting races was the fins relay, where swimmers wore flippers during the race. Most swimmers had them duct taped to make sure they did not come off during the race.

“It brings everyone together and it was not about winning or losing,” said North’s Jared Carroll, who participated in the flippers race. “The only hard part about the race was that it really wore down my legs, but with the adrenaline, you really get through it.”

Another race that was very entertaining included a relay where the swimmers wore jeans. Some of the exchanges were interesting. One team had two members pull off the jeans by each pant leg, another team tried to pull it off first inside-out. Even a couple of swimmers almost lost their jeans completely while swimming.

“The jeans are huge, so the water fills it up fast,” said North’s Hannah Manlief, who participated in the jeans relay. “We had to go the extra mile in order to get a really good time.”

The most exciting race was the swimmers, parents, and coaches 100 relay. Bull Frogs coach Logan Schaefer participated in the event. Schaefer was a former swimmer at Southridge High School and swam one year at Indiana University before an injury prematurely ended his career. It brought back a lot of memories for him.

“It was fun, and the kids and parents get excited about the race,” Schaefer said. “Everyone likes to stand up and be loud for the race and cheer. It’s all for the kids, but it does bring back fun memories.”

Columbus North’s girls finished fourth with 300 points. Bloomington North won with 382.

Center Grove won the boys meet with 364 points. The Bull Frogs were fourth with a 306.

Schaefer now will have his team focused and get them prepared for the training that comes as they get ready for the state tournament at the end of the season. Prior to Saturday, Schaefer liked how his team was improving little by little every meet.

“It is the halfway point for us,” Schaefer said. “The kids are looking forward to finishing a great semester in the classrooms, as well as continuing to work hard in the pool.”
